In 1971 a group of physicians established an independent
international relief agency to 'offer emergency assistance wherever
wars and man-made disasters occur.' Private donors and volunteer
health professionals help keep the organization independent of
'governments, institutions, political, economic or religious
influences.' Now, the worlds's largest independent medical relief
agency,
Doctors Without Borders, also known as Medecins Sans
Frontieres (MSF), has offices in 18 countries. Since its inception,
more than 15,000 volunteers have provided aid to those in need.
They've traveled by automobile, airplane, boat, packhorse and foot
to bring assistance. -
