Court Sends Firm Signal on Marijuana,

On August 29, the US Supreme Court struck a serious blow to the growing movement to use marijuana for medicinal purposes. The Court's 'emergency' order blocks a [1996] California law that legalized marijuana for patients whose doctors recommend it to relieve pain, writes Kris Axtman in the Christian Science Monitor. Some observers interpret the 7-1 ruling as a sign from the Court that more rulings barring medicinal use are likely. 'This case could very well end up being terribly important in the debate on medical marijuana,' says Keith Stroup, founder of the Washington-based National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. 'It may be a harbinger of things to come from the Supreme Court.' -- LU
