On August 29, the US Supreme Court struck a serious blow to the
growing movement to use marijuana for medicinal purposes. The
Court's 'emergency' order blocks a [1996] California law that
legalized marijuana for patients whose doctors recommend it to
relieve pain, writes Kris Axtman in the
Christian Science
Monitor. Some observers interpret the 7-1 ruling as a sign
from the Court that more rulings barring medicinal use are likely.
'This case could very well end up being terribly important in the
debate on medical marijuana,' says Keith Stroup, founder of the
Washington-based National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana
Laws. 'It may be a harbinger of things to come from the Supreme
Court.'
