Christina Valhouli, George Magazine
If you think of Danny Glover as just that Hollywood actor who co-starred in the Lethal Weapon movies, you are missing out on one of the most politically aware personalities appearing on the silver screen today, according to Christina Valhouli of George Magazine. His long career in activism began even before his acting, when he was an economics student at San Francisco State College during the civil rights movement. Today he maintains similar leftist ideals, advocating for the abolition of the World Trade Organization, suing the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission for racial discrimination after five cabs in a row refused to pick him up, and donating a million dollars to the African-Caribbean lobbying group TransAfrica Forum. Valhouli enumerates more: 'Last May, the 53-year-old actor lobbied the Texas legislature and hit the morning talk-show circuit to try to stop the execution of Gary Graham. As co-chair of the Fund for Democratic Election, he traveled to South Africa with Angela Bassett and Alfre Woodard to encourage blacks there to vote in 1994, and crisscrossed the South with pal Harry Belafonte, stumping for better working conditions for black farmers.' As Belafonte put it, 'Danny's analysis of life is seen through a political prism.' -- Amanda Luker
