Food for Thought, Jeannette Batz, St. Louis Riverfront Times
While working as executive chef at Vermont's historic Brattleboro Inn, Ann Cooper began to realize the importance of 'regional, seasonal, organic, sustainable food.' She adapted her cooking to these standards, and went on to co-author Bitter Harvest: A Chef's Perspective on the Hidden Dangers in the Foods We Eat. At a recent book signing in St. Louis, Cooper had the chance to take on a representative from biotech giant Monsanto, writes Jeannette Batz in the St. Louis Riverfront Times. The company is headquartered in St. Louis. Now, more than ever, says Cooper, eating is a political act: 'If we spend all our money at McDonald's, we are supporting their vision of food. If we shop at a farmers' market, we're supporting an entirely different worldview.'
