A Story With a Hole in the Middle: Has Krispy Kreme Come Home to a Place It's Never Been Before?

Sara Roahen, Gambit Weekly
A sweet, succulent mystery is unfolding in New Orleans. Krispy Kreme, the 63-year old doughnut company that shocked pundits this year by becoming one of Wall Street's hottest new properties, has long said its secret recipe originated in The Big Easy with a Frenchman named Joe LeBeau. However, a local investor has done some digging and discovered a 'hole' in the official story, reports Sara Roahen in Gambit Weekly. It appears LeBeau might just be a decades-old marketing ploy, as real as Ronald McDonald. Krispy Kreme executives, however, remain tight lipped about the fabled Frenchman. This discovery may not seem that striking to most people, but to lovers of Krispy Kreme doughnuts ('...they are to other doughnuts what angels are to people,' wrote The New York Times' Roy Blount Jr.), it's big news indeed.
