A failing shopping mall may prove to be a blessing to some communities, according to a new study from the Congress for the New Urbanism (www.cnu.org/malls). More than 100 major malls in America now face dire economic problems. Instead of trying to revive them in an already overcrowded retail market, the large tracts of land they occupy could be transformed into classic city neighborhoods with sidewalks, elementary schools, and corner coffee shops. It’s already happening with the appropriately named Cinderella City mall in Englewood, Colorado.
