Corporations Behaving Badly: The 10 Worst Corporations of 2001, Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman, Multinational Monitor
Corporate giants like Coca-Cola, ExxonMobil, and Philip Morris, well-known for their criminal records and disregard for the public's health, topped Multinational Monitor's list of the 10 Worst Corporations of 2001. Sara Lee also made the list for its denial of responsibility for the deaths of 21 people from a bacteria traced to one of their subsidiaries' hot dog plants; Bayer, for its monopoly and price gouging for the drug Cipro; and Southern Company, for its use of out-dated, coal-burning power plants and its pollution record. Also rounding out the top 10 is Wal-Mart. The largest employer in the United States, Wal-Mart uses sweatshops and blocks unionization efforts of their employees, according to the report.
