Montana state officials violated a law by driving their snowmobiles off the designated trails in a national forest as they chased a herd of buffalo near Yellowstone National Park, reports the Buffalo Field Campaign (BFC). The group, which works for the protection of buffalo, says that the officials also threw sticks and snowballs while chasing the herd for more than three hours. The agents, from the Department of Livestock and the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, were trying to run the animals back into Yellowstone. BFC members documenting the operation were restricted from the area and threatened with arrest, while tourists on snowmobiles were permitted within the same area. This is where the danger lies, suggests one BFC spokesman, who warns that once an agent drive their snowmobiles off trails, "tourists are tempted to follow in his tracks."
