  • Non-citizens can now be detained indefinitely on minor visa violations.

  • Broader wiretapping and Internet surveillance are now allowed.

  • The government's ability to conduct secret searches has been expanded.

  • Attorney General John Ashcroft now has the power to designate domestic groups as terrorist organizations and can deport any non-citizen member of those groups.

  • The FBI now has the authority to demand access to sensitive business records without demonstrating that a crime has been committed.

  • Law enforcement officials have broad latitude to investigate citizens for "intelligence purposes."

  • Airline security officials can refuse to allow a passenger to board a plane based on the book the passenger is reading.

  • The government can use military tribunals to try and sentence suspects without a jury or public access to the process.

  • Law enforcement officials now have permission to monitor communications between lawyers and their clients.
