The American Civil Liberties Union is challenging a new Arizona law that bans prisoners from accessing the Internet. The suit, on behalf of three prisoner advocacy groups, argues that the law has a chilling effect on free speech, and unfairly hampers the work of prison reform organizations that rely on the Internet to communicate with inmates. 'Arizona's attempts to restrict and censor the content of advocacy organizations' own Web sites certainly violates the Constitution and establishes a troubling precedent,' says Ann Beeson, litigation director of the ACLU's Technology and Liberty Program, told Index on Censorship. 'Prisoners and the groups that choose to assist them retain the same vital freedom of speech that all Americans do.'
