Can Green-Certified Lumber Make It?

Since 1993 nearly 9 million acres of land and 452 sawmills have become certified as ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable, writes Jane Braxton Little in High Country News. But these manufacturers of 'green' lumber are wondering whether they will ever make a profit from their efforts. While most consumers might prefer to buy sustainably harvested lumber, they're rarely willing to pay more for it. Still, retailers that give preference to certified lumber and institutions constructing environmentally friendly buildings are among trends forest managers hope to see flourish in the future.
