The antiquated village of Colletta di Castelbianco in northern Italy has been reborn as one of the world’s first cyber-communities, a haven for mobile knowledge workers who want to live in medieval settings but remain plugged into the modern world. The 10-year project included wiring the small mountain village with Internet, satellite TV, phone, and video-cable connections, notes Ian Wylie in Fast Company (Aug. 2002). Unfortunately, the developer’s dreams of a cozy mountain community have not yet been realized: Most of the new cybervillagers drop in only for a month or two during the summer.
