In a land of violence and despair, the Palestinian Youth
Association for Leadership and Rights Activation (PYALARA) is
giving Palestinian Youth at least one reason to be hopeful about
the future. Funded mainly by UNICEF and the International Red
Cross, PYALARA provides jobs, a meeting place, peer counseling, a
phone hotline, and a newspaper for youth writing. While PYALARA has
actually prevented some youth from becoming suicide bombers, others
have found help through talking to peers and telling their stories.
'We have no meanings to our lives, says Ahmed Ayysh. 'And before
PYALARA I had trouble speaking about my feelings--now I speak with
thousands at (the university).'
