How Low Can Dow Go?

Dow/Union Carbide, the multi-national chemical company whose 1984  plant disaster is responsible for the deaths of thousands in Bhopal, India, last week filed suit against a group of survivors for protesting in front of the company’s Bombay headquarters. Greenpeace.org reports that the 200 protesters had delivered a container of toxic waste to the office building and demanded that the company take responsibility for the disaster and clean up the Bhopal site. Dow, which merged with Union Carbide in 2001, responded by filing a $10,000 suit against the protesters for “loss of work.” The two-hour protest attracted a single Dow employee, who left his office to talk with the survivors.
