Gender Contender: How About a Woman for President?
January 20, 2003
Allison Stevens The American Prospect
Women represent 52 percent of the population, yet with
theexception of some Republican lip service for Elizabeth Dole
in2000 and a semi-serious bid by Democrat Patricia Schroeder
in1988, one has never run for president. As a result, writesAllison
Stevens in The American Prospect, issues ofimportance to
female voters, such as welfare and gun control, aren’t getting the
priority they deserve on CapitalHill. Even more imperative is
the protection ofwomen’s reproductive rights as one, and possibly
two,Supreme Court justices are expected to retire during
thisGOP-dominated election cycle. Stevens makes several
compellingarguments for the Democrats to nominate a woman in 2004,
alongwith a list of qualified candidates.
