Gender Contender: How About a Woman for President?

Women represent 52 percent of the population, yet with theexception of some Republican lip service for Elizabeth Dole in2000 and a semi-serious bid by Democrat Patricia Schroeder in1988, one has never run for president. As a result, writesAllison Stevens in The American Prospect, issues ofimportance to female voters, such as welfare and gun control,aren’t getting the priority they deserve on CapitalHill.  Even more imperative is the protection ofwomen’s reproductive rights as one, and possibly two,Supreme Court justices are expected to retire during thisGOP-dominated election cycle. Stevens makes several compellingarguments for the Democrats to nominate a woman in 2004, alongwith a list of qualified candidates.
