Using waste vegetable oil, methanol, and a touch of lye, Claudia Eyzaguirre makes her own fuel for her 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit. Wanting to disengage herself from the war-connected oil industry and its environmental destruction, Eyzaguirre bought a biodiesel car, and has been inspiring Bay Area drivers ever since with a sign above her bumper reading “This car runs on veggie oil.” Though there wouldn’t be enough waste vegetable oil to run every vehicle in the United States, biodiesel is the fastest-growing alternative energy fuel, is cheap and non-carcinogenic, and can be made at home without any use of damaging drilling rigs or smog-spewing refineries.
