San Francisco Taps the Sun

San Francisco is about to become one of the largest producers of solar power in the U.S. Thanks to the Vote Solar Initiative, a ballot measure passed by voters in 2001, the city has $100 million to spend on renewable energy systems, including solar, wind turbines, and energy efficiency improvements at public facilities, writes Kendra Mayfield in Wired News. The city's first major project will generate 675 kilowatts of power from 5,000 solar cells installed on the roof of the Moscone Convention Center. One of the primary goals of the project, say the organizers of the Vote Solar Initiative, is to drive down the cost of solar power systems for everyone by increasing demand.
