Bolivia Rocked by Violent Strike

Eight policemen and two soldiers were killed during a February 12 riot in La Paz, sparked by the announcement of a new IMF-ordered salary tax. According to a BBC news report, the conflict arose when military soldiers used tear gas and bullets on a crowd of protesting police officers and citizens. President Sanchez de Lozado was forced to abandon the tax plans in hopes of avoiding an imminent general strike.
