The Straight Edge Scene

Article Tools

Straight Edge is a movement that was spawned from the '80s hard-core punk scene. Those who claim Straight Edge have sworn off drugs, alcohol and promiscuous sex and some are also vegetarian, vegan or never use caffeine. Many claim that the movement began with the punk band Minor Threat's lead singer Ian MacKaye and his song "Straight Edge," which depicts the ugly side of drug use. Members of the movement are often identified by triple Xs that are worn as patches or tattoos, but make no mistake, Straight Edge is not a gang or a cult—it's a way of life.
