I Am Cyber-Mann

In fifth grade I was assigned to write an essay on the future integration of Artificial Intelligence and humanity. A consummate creative writer, I dashed off an elaborate dissertation about a purple common sense pill that would cause leaders to embrace world peace. It was brilliant. It was revolutionary. It garnered a C-. Eighteen years later, I’m still trying to wrap my brain around this baffling concept. Enter Cyberman, a documentary about “Canada’s original cyborg,” inventor and professor Steve Mann. Mann experiences life through an integration of human experience and technology, utilizing “Eye-Tap” sunglasses, computers and recording devices. His objective—to show others the world through his eyes. “Steve lives in a universe where information is mainlined into memory, where he daily records his encounters with the outer world,” says Cyberman producer Michael Allder. Cyberman airs March 12 at 8 p.m. on CBC TV’s The Nature of Things with David Suzuki, available on cable on some parts of the U.S.
