America's second-largest coffee distributor offers fair-trade coffee

Proctor & Gamble got a recent jolt from activists pressuring the company to offer fair-trade coffee, reports John Nolan of the Associated Press. Last month, America's second-largest coffee distributor introduced the Mountain Moonlight brand for online and mail-order purchase after an extensive PR campaign. Fair-trade coffee bypasses the middleman, offering a greater return to coffee growers -- a much-needed boost, given the 50-year low in world coffee prices. While P&G isn't the first large corporation to offer fair-trade coffee, observers call the move a major victory that will open doors to wider fair-trade coffee distribution.
