A Seattle auto repair shop has sparked a clean-fuel movement in the Puget Sound area, reports Orion (July/Aug. 2003). Since October 2001, Dan Freeman has been selling biodiesel made from processed soybean oil or recycled cooking grease to about 250 motorists, who prepay for the fuel in $100 increments and get a key to the pump at Dr. Dan's Alternative Fuel Werks. Freeman's approach has proven so popular that several other co-ops have sprouted in the area. "Why are we playing with this toxic goo from halfway around the world when we could be growing something in our own backyard?" he says.
