The Coach Potato Adventure
Pedaling across Prince Edward Island on a sofa
Jacqueline White Utne magazine
May / June 2004
Take a 95-pound faux leather chesterfield, attach two drive
trains with pedals, and you're ready to see the sites on Canada's
Prince Edward Island. At least that was the transportation mode
pioneered by mechanical engineer Brent Curry and his Norwegian
cycling partner, Eivind Meen. As chronicled on Curry's Website,
www.bikeforest.com, and in
such Canadian niche magazines as Pedal, Outpost,
and Explore, the couchbike was a sight to behold: At
nearly seven feet across, the behemoth is wider than a Lincoln
Navigator, and it once attained a dizzying downhill speed of just
over 27 miles per hour.
