Khaled
Musician (Algeria)
Utne Reader September / October 2007
Possibly the most famous Algerian rai singer of all time, Khaled is one of the few North African artists to have won wide acclaim, particularly in his adopted home of France, where his singles 'Aïcha' and 'Didi' topped the charts. As a child in Algeria, he was influenced by Arabic, Spanish, and French music, as well as the Beatles and James Brown. After moving to France in 1986, he recorded a string of successful albums, including Kenza and Sahra, before going back to his roots with his latest, Ya-Rayi.
