Konono No. 1
Musicians (Congo)
Utne Reader September / October 2007
Konono No. 1 is a unique musical collective from Kinshasa whose members use percussion instruments salvaged from junkyards, electric likemb? (thumb piano), and voices filtered through a crude PA system. The cacophony is unforgettable. The band is led by Mawangu Mingiedi, a former taxi driver, now in his 70s, who adapts trance-inducing Bazombo ritual music, as heard on the band's critically acclaimed album Congotronics.
