Utne Reader September / October 2007
Formed by the Guinean choreographer Keita Fodeba in Paris in 1952, this dance company successfully toured the world until Guinea's independence in 1958. On returning to its native country, the company became a national treasure. Les Ballets Africains, affectionately known as 'roving ambassadors,' is credited with enlightening audiences about Guinean culture. The lively music is made by drums, flutes, and Guinean castanets.
