Rachid Taha
Musician (Algeria)
Utne Reader September / October 2007
Taha's music emulates the guttural, promiscuous, and socially satirical rural rai style typified by the late Cheikha Remitti. Taha started out in the French rock band Carte De Séjour, where his politically charged lyrics took shape. A string of solo albums, bursting with traditional Algerian rhythms and a healthy punk-rock attitude, followed. His best-loved album is Diwân, in which he covers classic Algerian songs.
