Tsitsi Dangarembga
Author (Zimbabwe)
Utne Reader September / October 2007
Author (Zimbabwe)
When Dangarembga's first book, Nervous Conditions, won her the Commonwealth Writers Prize for African fiction in 1989, writer Doris Lessing wrote: 'This is the novel we have been waiting for.... It will become a classic.' It was read by millions and was nominated in the top 12 among Africa's 100 best books of the 20th century. The follow-up has been long coming (Dangarembga turned her attention to film), but The Book of Not (Ayebia Clarke Publishing, 2006) is a powerful story spanning the period from minority rule to the emergence of independent Zimbabwe.
