For years, wheelchair users in need of vehicles have had to opt for big, boxy converted vans. Understandably, environmental concerns have taken a back seat. Luckily, a Hungarian company called Rehab Ltd. has developed the Kenguru, a nimble, user-friendly electric car designed specifically to accommodate a wheelchair.

The vehicle has no side doors; instead, the driver rolls in through a rear hatchback and over an automatically lowering ramp. The car is 85 inches long and 61 inches wide and has a range of about 30 miles at a top speed of 30 miles an hour.

The vehicle hasn’t made it stateside yet, but it’s getting closer, says Green Car Journal (Spring 2008). Kenguru UK launched last summer in England, and the company plans expansion to the United States in the near future.
