Film Review: Tarnished Tiara
TABLOID (in theaters July 15, Sundance Selects)
by Anthony Kaufman
July-August 2011
In Tabloid, documentary genius Errol Morris applies the same investigative spirit seen in his films The Thin Blue Line and The Fog of War to less weighty subject matter: the strange case of Joyce McKinney. The former Miss Wyoming made headlines in the 1970s for allegedly kidnapping and raping a Mormon man, and she becomes a focal point for a familiar Morris concern, the fickle nature of truth. (Is McKinney a sexual predator or a devoted lover?) The movie is a ribald ride through the worlds of scandal sheets and sensationalist media, as entertaining and engaging as its source material.
