Most insect collectors want only two specimens of each species they fancy: a male and a female. Artist Jennifer Angus amasses thousands of bugs at a time for her installations of insect “wallpaper,” according to American Craft (April-May 2009). Delicate creatures including green beetles (above) and cicadas and scarab beetles (in the image gallery) are her “inspiration, prime subject, and preferred medium” in colorful, intricate works that “evoke beauty and pestilence,” the magazine writes. Angus’ breakage rate is 50 percent, but even that cannot dissuade her from her painstaking entomological craft: “We’re creating weevil cyborgs with the mismatched parts,” she says.
