Utne Reader Names Three Californians as Visionaries  National Magazine Counts Residents Among 25 People Who Are Changing the World

SAN FRANCISCO (Oct. 21, 2010) — Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names three California residents as visionaries who are making the world a better place. They are among 25 people the magazine highlights in its November/December issue, on newsstands now.

“Throughout the year, as we read and plan issues, our editorial staff and select freelancers compile lists of people and institutions across disciplines that are doing work that challenges the status quo and promises positive, forward progress,” says David Schimke, Utne Reader’s editor in chief.

California Visionaries:
Judith Butler, author, “Frames of War: When Is Life Grievable?” Butler teaches rhetoric and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley. Her book suggests that by defining people as residents of war zones, we allow ourselves to think of them as natural victims of violence and do not grieve their deaths. Butler works with gender and sexual politics, human rights, anti-war politics, and Jewish Voice for Peace.

Tani Ikeda, cofounder, ImMEDIAte Justice. Ikeda started this Los Angeles-based program to teach young women about media literacy and sexual health through filmmaking. The program provides teens a comfortable environment where they can educate their peers about sexual health issues, including those in the LGBT community.

Rebecca Solnit, author, “A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster.” Solnit is a historian, writer and activist who tells the stories of communities’ strength and perseverance after natural disasters. She also is a contributing editor to Harper’s and has written for Orion magazine and Tomdispatch.com, among other places. Solnit resides in San Francisco.
