Utne Reader Names Founders of Massachusetts Nonprofits as VisionariesNational Magazine Selects Three Visionaries in Boston Among 25 People Who Are Changing the World
BOSTON (Oct. 21, 2010) — Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names the founders of three Boston nonprofit agencies as visionaries. They are among 25 people the magazine highlights in its November/December issue, on newsstands now.
“Throughout the year, as we read and plan issues, our editorial staff and select freelancers compile lists of people and institutions across disciplines who are doing work that challenges the status quo and promises positive, forward progress,” says David Schimke, Utne Reader’s editor in chief.
Nina Dudnik, founder, Seeding Labs. Dudnik founded her organization as a student at Harvard University and expanded chapters throughout the East Coast at Boston University, Mount. Sinai Medical School, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Yale University Medical School. Seeding Labs distributes reclaimed lab equipment to scientists in developing countries to further connect them to the global scientific community.
Rebecca Onie, CEO, Project HEALTH. Onie founded this nonprofit organization in Boston and expanded to Baltimore; Chicago; New York; Providence, R.I.; and Washington, D.C. Project HEALTH enlists volunteers to connect low-income patients at health clinics to housing, food, heating assistance and other vital nonmedical resources.
Woody Tasch, founder, Slow Money. Tasch aims to build local and national networks and create new financial products and services focusing on local food systems and economies. Tasch’s goal over the next decade is to see 1 million Americans invest 1 percent of their assets in local food systems. Slow Money is based in Brookline.
