Utne Reader Names D.C. Residents “Visionaries”
Magazine Selects Political Activist, Sports Columnist, Architect and Solar Champion Among 50 People who are Changing the World

WASHINGTON (Oct. 14, 2009) — Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names four D.C. residents as visionaries who are making their mark on the world. They are among 50 people the magazine has included in its November-December issue, on newsstands Oct. 20.

D.C. Visionaries:

Maya Enista, CEO, Mobilize.org -- Young people are facing a stagnant job market, rising debt and little representation in government. The 80 Million Strong campaign, with its 26-year-old CEO Maya Enista, wants to restack the odds by pushing for legislation that creates opportunities and encourages leadership. Think of it as the AARP for the millennial generation.

Dave Zirin, sports columnist -- In his syndicated Edge of Sports column, and from a variety of platforms including XM Satellite Radio and The Nation, he addresses current flaps with refreshing candor. Writing about a punching incident during a football game, he notes that “beneath the veneer, college football is a multibillion-dollar spectacle of unpaid labor and unhinged fandom.”

Diana Balmori, founder, Balmori Associates -- Balmori is an architect that built a reputation designing green roofs. Her visions keep growing more ambitious, melding futurism with sustainability.

Jigar Shah, energy innovator -- As the founder of SunEdison, Shah pioneered a new finance model for solar power. He’s now set his sights “beyond the carbon economy” by heading a climate-change initiative called the Carbon War Room.

“Each of the inventors, environmentalists, media activists and community organizers we chose to celebrate this year are fueled by an inexhaustible desire to serve the greater good. Labors of peace, love and justice are rarely celebrated these days, and given the many challenges facing our world, it was exciting to give readers 50 reasons to believe in a brighter future,” says David Schimke, Utne Reader’s editor in chief.
