Utne Reader Names Southern California Residents as “Visionaries”
Magazine Selects Social Critic and Advocate for the Blind Among 50 People who are Changing the World
LOS ANGELES (Oct. 14, 2009) - Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names Sarah Haskins of Los Angeles and Daniel Kish of Long Beach as visionaries who are making a difference in the world. They are among 50 people the magazine has named visionaries in its November-December issue, on newsstands Oct. 20.
Haskins is a comedian with a feminist agenda. Her “Target Women” segments on Current TV take on society’s hang-ups and mock celebrity culture to make feminist critiques informative and darkly funny.
Kish serves as cofounder and executive director for World Access for the Blind, a nonprofit that approaches managing blindness by emphasizing self-direction and loosening “attachments to the idea we should limit ourselves or be limited.”
“Each of the inventors, environmentalists, media activists and community organizers we chose to celebrate this year are fueled by an inexhaustible desire to serve the greater good. Labors of peace, love and justice are rarely celebrated these days, and given the many challenges facing our world, it was exciting to give readers 50 reasons to believe in a brighter future,” says David Schimke, Utne Reader’s editor in chief.
