Utne Reader Names Three North Carolina Residents as “Visionaries”
National Magazine Selects Raleigh, Durham Citizens Among 50 People who are Changing the World

RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 14, 2009) — Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names Jonathan Kuniholm, Tom Regan and Alexis Pauline Gumbs visionaries who are making their individual marks on the world. They are among 50 people the magazine features in its November-December issue, on newsstands Oct. 20.

“Each of the inventors, environmentalists, media activists and community organizers we chose to celebrate this year are fueled by an inexhaustible desire to serve the greater good. Labors of peace, love and justice are rarely celebrated these days, and given the many challenges facing our world, it was exciting to give readers 50 reasons to believe in a brighter future,” says David Schimke, Utne Reader’s editor in chief.

After losing an arm while serving as a Marine in Iraq in 2005,  Jonathan Kuniholm needed a replacement. He tried several prostheses but found the best available option to be a body-powered arm with a split hook, patented in 1912. Kuniholm has since focused on using approaches like open-source design to push improvements all the way to consumers. As a researcher at Duke University, he’s one of more than 300 engineers working on the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Revolutionizing Prosthetics program.

Regan, the philosophical leader of the animal rights movement, authored “The Case for Animal Rights.“ He helped construct a legal framework around the issue — and whatever your stand, he’ll make you rethink it.

Radical feminist and artist Gumbs has created Queer Black MobileHomeComing, a traveling “intergenerational community documentation and education project” that challenges our culture’s view of heterosexuality as the norm.
