Utne Reader Names Oregon Activist David Oaks a “Visionary”Magazine Selects the Director of MindFreedom International Among 50 People who are Changing the World

EUGENE, Ore. (Oct. 14, 2009) — Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names David Oaks as a visionary who is making a difference in the world. He is among 50 people the magazine has named visionaries in its November-December issue, on newsstands Oct. 20.

Oaks serves as director for MindFreedom International, an organization raising awareness about mental health issues and fighting the media biases that he says reinforce cultural stigmas. His group’s members flout their “mad pride,” their right not to take medications, and they share stories of systemic abuses. Oaks himself is a psychiatric survivor who battled severe mental and emotional problems as a Harvard student decades ago.

“Each of the inventors, environmentalists, media activists and community organizers we chose to celebrate this year are fueled by an inexhaustible desire to serve the greater good. Labors of peace, love and justice are rarely celebrated these days, and given the many challenges facing our world, it was exciting to give readers 50 reasons to believe in a brighter future,” says David Schimke, Utne Reader’s editor in chief.
