Utne Reader Wins Best Cover Illustration at min Editorial & Design Awards  
Obama graphic starts discussion about his administration’s food policy rhetoric versus its action

 MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 9, 2010) — Utne Reader won first place for Best Cover Illustration yesterday at the min Editorial & Design Awards held at the Grand Hyatt in New York City.

Utne Reader’s September-October 2010 cover introduces readers to a package on the politics of food. A caricature of President Obama holds a cheeseburger with a pack of cigarettes in his shirt pocket, while a frowning Michelle Obama hovers over his shoulder as his conscience, wearing gardening gloves and holding a handful of fresh carrots. The juxtaposition emphasizes the clash between this administration’s rhetoric on food policy and public health, including the First Lady’s attempts to make family and school meals healthier, and the president’s support of big agriculture through his personnel appointments and policy agenda.

The cover also pokes fun at President Obama – something unexpected from left-leaning Utne Reader. Art Director Stephanie Glaros and Editor in Chief David Schimke selected illustrator Jason Seiler for this project because they felt his illustrations, particularly of political figures, were both funny and insightful.

“Jason’s caricatures are so accurate, people often think he’s manipulating photographs. But they’re entirely hand drawn,” Glaros says. “He not only captures what people look like, but who they are.”
