Utne Reader Names Whitesville’s Judy Bonds a “Visionary”
National Magazine Selects the Environmental Activist Among 50 People who are Changing the World
WHITESVILLE, W.V. (Oct. 14, 2009) — Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names Judy Bonds as a visionary who is making a difference in the world. She is among the 50 visionaries the magazine is featuring in its November-December issue, on newsstands Oct. 20.
Bonds is a veteran activist of the anti-mountaintop removal movement and co-director of the Coal River Mountain Watch. Bonds and the members of the Coal River Mountain Watch continue to “fight for social, economic and environmental justice,” challenging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and demonstrating against environmental injustices.
“Each of the inventors, environmentalists, media activists and community organizers we chose to celebrate this year are fueled by an inexhaustible desire to serve the greater good. Labors of peace, love and justice are rarely celebrated these days, and given the many challenges facing our world, it was exciting to give readers 50 reasons to believe in a brighter future,” says David Schimke, Utne Reader’s editor in chief.
The recipient of the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2003, Bonds often travels to share her enthusiasm and expertise at conferences and workshops and is inspired by new activists who are interested in her cause.
“This is an exciting time to be an activist, and this honor helps the average person to understand what an activist does. Let’s make more activists,” Bonds says.
