Utne Reader Names Wisconsin Residents as “Visionaries”
National Magazine Selects Two Food Advocates Among 50 People who are Changing the World
MILWAUKEE (Oct. 14, 2009) - Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names Wisconsin residents Mark Kastel and Will Allen as visionaries who are making a difference in the world. They are among 50 visionaries the magazine features in its November-December issue, on newsstands Oct. 20.
“Each of the inventors, environmentalists, media activists and community organizers we chose to celebrate this year are fueled by an inexhaustible desire to serve the greater good. Labors of peace, love and justice are rarely celebrated these days, and given the many challenges facing our world, it was exciting to give readers 50 reasons to believe in a brighter future,” says David Schimke, Utne Reader’s editor in chief.

Mark Kastel co-founded The Cornucopia Institute, a nonprofit organics watchdog. The group monitors organic farmers, from meat producers to dairies, and from family-scale outfits to corporate megafarms. By doing both on-site and third-party research, Kastel and Cornucopia help farmers and consumers keep track of who’s playing it straight.
Will Allen is founder and CEO of Growing Power. This Macarthur Foundation fellow’s nonprofit Growing Power is pioneering ways to feed fresh food to those who live in the “food deserts” of our inner cities.
