Internship Opportunities at Utne Reader
Utne Reader is the nation’s digest of the alternative press. At the heart of our project is our library: a feast of 1,300 independent publications—from magazines and journals to alt-weeklies and zines—from which our editors glean the very best articles, essays, and ideas. We reprint the sharpest pieces (and are inspired to write original content, too) in each bimonthly issue and every day on Utne.com.
We’re a hard-working, passionate group of people—and from our interns we expect enthusiasm, diligence, and great ideas. These internships offer special insight into the vibrant world of independent publishing. Utne Reader interns have opportunities to work with veteran editors, writers, and media professionals as they gain experience producing a national magazine and its website.
PLEASE NOTE:
- All internships are on site at our Minneapolis office.
- Internships are unpaid, save a $75/month transportation stipend.
- Though application deadlines are given below for various openings, do not wait to apply.
- We cannot make exceptions to the length of internship commitments.
Editorial Internships
Editorial interns read in the library and pitch story ideas, participate in editorial meetings, work on research projects, and handle duties related to library management, unsolicited manuscripts, and book publishers. They also regularly write for Utne.com, and may have opportunities to write for the print edition, too.
Above all, we’re seeking people who are energized about alternative media: voracious readers, inventive thinkers, and determined reporters. Experience in journalism or publishing is preferred, but not mandatory.
Internship length is six months, 20 hours per week. We do not have summer internships, but wish you the best of luck in finding one. To apply, send a cover letter, resume, contact information for two professional or academic references, and three writing samples to Internship Coordinators, Utne Reader, 12 North 12th Street, Suite 400, Minneapolis, MN 55403. We also welcome e-mail applications. Questions? Email Danielle Maestretti and Julie Hanus.
Openings:
- Early December (apply no later than November 1, 2009)
Art Internship
Art interns learn about and contribute to the creative design and production of the magazine. In the art department, we are involved with the creation of Utne Reader from the conception of themes to typing in the last correction before printing. The art intern maintains photo and illustration archives and conducts photo research, from initial contacts with image sources through acquisition of final imagery. Interns are also involved in the selection of publicity images, stock images, and images from independent photographers. Depending upon area of study, this intern also may be involved in photo shoots, editorial meetings, and/or illustration assignments.
This program is for students of graphic design, illustration and/or photography. Internship length is 4 months, approximately 8-16 hours/week. If you are interested, please send a cover letter and resume to Stephanie Glaros, Art Director, Utne Reader, 12 North 12th Street, Suite 400, Minneapolis, MN 55403. E-mail applications are also welcome. Questions? Email Stephanie Glaros.
Openings:
- Internships begin in January, May, and September. Apply at least one month in advance.
