The Violence of Poverty
Joe Sacco’s illustrations force viewers to confront economic disaster
by Joe Sacco
March-April 2011
Joe Sacco accompanied Chris Hedges to Camden, New Jersey, and provided the gritty illustrations for “City of Ruins.” Sacco is no stranger to violent, challenging, and depressed environments. It’s hard not to see distressing parallels between the America depicted in his collaboration with Hedges and many of the places the Maltese-born artist and journalist has visited for his book-length projects, which include The Fixer: A Story from Sarajevo; War’s End: Profiles from Bosnia 1995–96; and Palestine: In the Gaza Strip, winner of the 1996 American Book Award.
