Northern California native Danielle Maestretti is Utne Reader’s librarian. Aside from rapping the knuckles of her alphabetical-order–shunning coworkers, she maintains Utne’s library of some 1,300 periodicals and writes about the independent press for the magazine’s Shelf Life column. Danielle edited the newspaper at her alma mater, Macalester College, a small liberal arts school to which she credits her excessive use of the word problematic. She also has worked in the realms of corporate America, public education, university libraries, and self-publishing. She enjoys baking, bicycling, and fervently discussing public education, Argentine politics, and Battlestar Galactica.
