Fascism Comes To Michigan

Michigan-Fascism

The very essence of democratic rule may be about to die in Michigan.

If Gov. Rick Snyder (R) gets his way soon he will have the ability to unilaterally declare a “fiscal emergency.”  Once such an emergency is declared he would then have the power to dissolve the entire municipal government of wherever this “emergency” exists, dismiss the elected officials with no replacement election to follow, seize control of local civil services and, last but certainly not least, cede control of taxpayer money, services and powers to private corporations.

Anyone else sense the Koch brothers lurking in the shadows?

Like other power grabs in Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio, this one is couched in terms of needing to wrest control away from the people and their unions in the name of financial austerity.

Snyder is like his other Tea Party Republican governors a product of crony-capitalism at its worst. After campaigning on concepts of limited government and democratic by-the-people rule, once in power Snyder, Walker and the others have almost immediately taken the unprecedented steps of trying to secure unilateral authority in the hands of the executive branch of government and granting unto themselves the ability to reward their corporate backers with the keys to the taxpayer safe.

It's not just the idea of the governor overriding the will of the electorate for the sake of his corporate overlords that is so offensive, it is that no one seems to care.  The Michigan voters don't seem to understand the power grab at play and most of the media has decided to ignore the story for more pressing matters like the Charlie Sheen meltdown.

If Snyder does get this bill through in Michigan, and it is likely he will, then the citizens of Michigan will have, perhaps unwittingly, given up their right to determine who governs at their consent.

Take Action: Don't let Governor Snyder steal Michigan's rights!

. The republicans created this financial disaster - just for this power grab. The people - union and non union - state workers and private sector workers did not create this financial disaster. The people did not make money on Wall Street - they lost their pensions. The people did not make money being foreclosed upon - they lost their homes. Tell me hoew N.A.F.T.A. helped the working class - by losing their jobs for cheaper imports?.?.? The people did not create the Afghanistan / Iraq Wars that cost one billion dollars a day. . .Did you ever hear anyone - say they wanted the C.I.A. to have a secret budget - the N.S.A. ?? The Pentasgon weapons cost ??? Are you safer today - as Dick Cheney likes to ask - a congresswoman was shot ( safer??). . . . . THINK . . . . David Stockman, the head of Reagan’’s Office of Management and Budget -eventually spilled the beans that the huge budget deficits caused by the president’s tax cuts had been a deliberate effort to create a budget crisis, which would lead to a slashing of entitlement spending, especially on programs for the poor. . . General Benedict Arnold - " said what he was doing was WHAT WAS BEST FOR THE COUNTRY while he was standing on the gallows." Governors attacking the workingclass- really best for the country ?.?.?

@Adam U.--I'm also not a Michigan resident but blaming state and local officials for your state's economic issues is wrong. The business model that conservatives like Gov. Snyder promote devalue labor which, contrary to their rhetoric, is the foundation for economic prosperity anywhere. They have moved jobs overseas to lower wages, they advocate low wages thru various means as a cost reduction but it has the equal effect of reducing demand and your tax base. Many other negative effects result from their campaign to devalue labor but, despite this, they have convinced you it's governments fault and they now want to deprive you of that one advocacy program that works for you. And when they do that your ability to vote them out of office will no longer exist--it has been replaced by a corporation in which you have no voice.

"The Michigan voters don't seem to understand the power grab at play and most of the media has decided to ignore the story for more pressing matters like the Charlie Sheen meltdown." No, sweetie: what you don't understand is that Michigan residents have simply had it. Michigan's state and local governments - with the exception of perhaps wealthy Oakland and Emmet Counties' - have let a once prosperous state rot over the last 40-something years. The fact that, in 2011, Republicans control both houses, in Michigan, is mind-boggling, but telling as voters have simply "had it." The author probably also doesn't live in Michigan; something necessary to have any real perspective her sweeping language implies she has. Ultimately, if Snyder and the GOP controlling things doesn't improve Michigan, the voters will boot them like they did the Dems.
