Mantsoe grew up dancing in Soweto and trained at the Moving Into Dance School in Johannesburg. He is the pioneer of Afro fusion, a blend of African aesthetics and traditions with Asian forms. His work draws on traditional African dance, the song and dance rituals of the sangomas (traditional healers), as well as modern, ballet, and European forms.
