21ST CENTURY BRINGS NEW LOOK AT ACTIVISM AND EMERGING YOUTH MOVEMENT
MINNEAPOLIS, MN—From San José, California to Chelsea, Massachusetts, Utne Magazine's 30 Under 30 Young Visionaries are breaking the mold for innovative, young, 21st century activists. Featured in the September/October magazine, the likes of revolutionary poet and performer Sarah Jones, and the underground publishers of Clamor magazine are choosing the cooperative approach to leadership.
"These incredible thinkers are redefining leadership for the 21st-century," says Karen Olson, senior editor of Utne Magazine. "They are radically changing our future through the simple act of collaboration."
These 30 young visionaries don’t consider themselves "heroes" or even "leaders" in their communities. They share their recognition with their colleagues. Pretty amazing when you're talking about folks who have started progressive organizations such as Al-Faitha—a Web-based gay Muslim support group, the Spanish Immersion Institute run by local youth of Edcouch, Texas or persons such as Malika Sanders, who organized the "Joe Gotta Go" campaign, electing the first black mayor of Selma, Alabama.
