READER MISSING FROM UTNE MAGAZINE
First Ever Utne Arts Extra to Hit Newsstand November 26
Minneapolis, MN – Utne Reader relaunches as Utne magazine with this month’s vibrant new November/December issue, and its first ever newsstand special, the Utne Arts Extra, proclaiming its mission to continue arousing intellect and inspire action.
"After much debate, we dropped the word ‘reader’ from our name," says owner Nina Utne. "The name has become cumbersome, and no longer quite fits us. We feel the important element of ‘reader’ lives on in our new tagline, ‘A different read on life’ and in our readers." The revitalized Utne magazine promises to deepen its coverage of practical solutions, inspirational visionaries, and real-world problems, all with a bit of its well-known quirky Utne humor.
"We’re more stridently proclaiming our mission, and proud to be raising the visibility of independent voices not always recognized in the mainstream," says co-publisher and Utne Arts Extra project director Julie Ristau. "The Utne Arts Extra and redesign are opportunities to sing with this kind of vitality, energy and action."
The Utne Arts Extra—on sale November 26—demonstrates Utne’s unique mission. Showcasing the best finds in music, books, arts and movies for 2003, the Utne Arts Extra introduces readers to a blend of rich new discoveries like mix-mistress Lila Downs and digital diva Mariko Mori, while highlighting innovative works by well-knowns such as Tom Waits and Susan Griffin. The scope of the Utne Arts Extra is unrivalled on newsstands today, and is sure to give readers a rare treat.
