Sometimes the warmest music comes from the coldest places. Buffalo Moon, a young bossa nova pop quintet, writes fun-in-the-sun, made-in-the-shade surf rock from the Minnesota tundra.

Lolling waves of laid-back grooves lap under splashy steel percussion and lead singer Karen Freire’s sultry, nostalgic vocals. But don’t pigeonhole the band as wannabe beach bums with a tropicalia twist: Though most of Selva Surreal is perfect for salsa dancing, the band mixes things up with sexy lounge-saxophone interludes, Middle Eastern melodies, and dubbed-out rhythms.
