New York Publications and Writer Featured in National Magazine
Commonweal, Esopus articles and author Stephanie Fairyington reprinted in Utne Reader
NEW YORK (April 6, 2010) — The Commonweal article, “Coming Home,” the Esopus article, “The Mind’s Eye,” and the Dissent article, “The Gay Option,” will be featured in the May-June issue of Utne Reader, on newsstands April 20.
The Commonweal article explores author Jonathan Odell’s experience as a devout Christian — who is also gay. It chronicles how he prepared for, delivered and responded to giving a talk about sexuality and religion at a Midwestern seminary. Commonweal is the oldest independent lay Catholic journal of opinion in the U.S., an arbiter of American life and Catholic thought and practice. It is nominated for an Utne Independent Press Award, in the best spiritual coverage category.
The Esopus article explores how severely autistic 23-year-old Alex Masket went from being an angry, out-of-control child to a calm and socially comfortable young man by discovering his natural artistic inclination. In the piece, Alex’s parents chronicle his transformation and discuss how their son’s discovery has proven both challenging and rewarding. The article also features Alex’s remarkable work. Esopus is a twice-yearly magazine that features content from all creative disciplines — like artists’ projects, critical writing, fiction, poetry, visual essays and interviews — presented in an unmediated format. It is nominated for an Utne Independent Press Award, in the best arts coverage category.
In the Dissent article, Stephanie Fairyington discusses how acting on one’s same-sex desires is a choice, while actually being homosexual isn’t, and how it has affected her life. Dissent is a quarterly magazine of politics and culture.
