Infamous TV Character Turns Cover Model for Utne Reader’s January-February Issue
MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 15, 2009) — Playboy might have lured Marge from “The Simpsons” to its pages, but Utne Reader’s January-February cover features the show’s infamous sleaze, Mr. Burns, in an even more compromising position: darning a sock.
“For 20 years, Mr. Burns’ over-the-top exploits have helped us all laugh at the absurdities of extreme wealth and unapologetic greed,” says Utne Reader Editor in Chief David Schimke. “Since we’re asking readers to re-imagine a recovery that hinges not on consumerism and waste, but on stronger communities and conscientious living, we couldn’t help but have a little fun with our favorite corporate weasel.”
The czar of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, C.M. Burns’ appetite for money drives him to exploit his workers and destroy the environment. The cover package’s lead article “Get Rich Now,” Page 39, explores how rethinking and re-evaluating this sort of mindset, as well as society’s obsession with consumerism, can help everyone prosper in the new economy.
“Even guys like Mr. Burns are going to have to change their ways,” Schimke says.
The January-February issue also features the introduction of Al Jazeera English to America, sociologist Richard Sennett explaining how working with our hands enhances critical thinking and radicalizes labor, Schimke’s interview with the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Mark Potok, Utne Reader Librarian Danielle Maestretti’s discovery of Baltimore’s booming literary scene, and more. The issue hits newsstands Dec. 22.
